I'm pretty sure the story of pre-YC reddit is that Steve and Alexis were interviewing by themselves, and almost got rejected, but then came back. Aaron also entered the program separately, trying to found Infogami. He then merged with Reddit in November. WTF, man?

It measures neither. I don't know what they measure, but none of it is correlated with actual reddit traffic.

That happens occasionally, and it's a bug. Basically when a story hits #1, we update it to reflect that it hit #1, and sometimes it breaks for a few moments.

I saw this the other day as well. I'll look into it.

The 'rising' sort is based more-or-less on page-views, and I think traffic fluctuates now more than it used to, causing the new page to swing a little more.

It's not actually being used. I believe a friend of ours wanted to give a demo of how reddit could be used for different things and asked if we could make the subreddit for him.
